And If I Can See the Sun explores mutable memories, the nuances within complex family dynamics, specifically between the women in my family, and how they have changed over time. By layering photos of my domestic spaces onto old childhood photos that hang on the walls of these spaces, I aim to distort linear narratives.
Motivated by a personal need to understand and contextualize my relationship with my older sister and our respective relationships with our mother, this series asks: How do physical spaces carry the memory of familial ties? How do shared yet individually interpreted experiences shape our relationships? How does photography play a role in forming and changing the memories captured within photos? I am interested in uncovering the contradictions of proximity and distance—how living away from my family has made me feel both closer and further from them emotionally.
